tI'm Mrs Simpson and I teach Sycamores Class.
I am the Senior Teacher at Shipley and Maths Subject Lead.
Sycamores, Years 5 and 6, are the top of the school, Upper Key Stage Two. Our class are hard working, enthusiastic and keen to try new things. This term our topic is: We are archaeologists - the Egyptians. We have a very busy term with lots of exciting activities to look forward to, including: post SATs party day, Bikeability, Marwell Activity Centre Residential visit, Connect with the Countryside Day and much more. This term, we are also lucky to have a student teacher in our class. Miss Zoe Pennicotte-Henrie. She will be teaching 5/6 in the morning and 4, 5, 6 in the afternoon.
PE days are Wednesday for Tennis and Thursday for games
Thursday is also Forest School day, please remember the two changes of clothes, thank you.
Summer Term - Our topic is:
We are archaeologists - The Egyptians
We will be learning all about ancient civilisations. Geographical formations and map work, including some DT, sewing of a giant map. We will be learning about Pharoahs, pyramids, tombs and Egyptian life.
Spelling and Homework
Homework folders should come home on a Thursday. The spelling books should come to school everyday for in-school practise. Spelling tests are on a Tuesday too and usually take the form of a dictation. I will put the weekly spellings on this page so you always have access to them. Try to encourage the children to learn the spelling patterns, root words and notice how words change for past, present and future. This term there will also be English homework, as well as weekly spellings.
As last year we will be checking the reading journals weekly on a Thursday and recording the comments from adults at home – these will count towards our reading rewards scheme and hopefully a visit to our Wormery in the Library. We are really hoping for great extras from the children too. See the Reading Journal letter for ideas.
Year 6- Weald Book Awards 2018
We will once again be taking part in The Weald Book Awards. The children are already reading the books, as are Mrs. Gorton and I. The list of books can be found on the link opposite. Our first event is an Author talk on Monday 9th October at The Weald. Please return the slips from the bottom of the letter.
Southampton Seacity Museum Trip - Friday 22nd September 2017
Ash and Sycamores classes had a wonderful day on this trip. We learnt an amazing amount about Titanic and her sister ships. The children took part in workshops, (some photos are scrolling on this page) had a tour of the Titanic part of the Museum and lunch, of course was a favourite part of the day! Ms Richardson and I would like to thank all of the adults who accompanied us on the trip. Without their freely given time we would not have been able to go. Watch out for the children's news reports about the visit. One was attached to last week's newsletter, more to follow.
